After the Muse sweeps you up in her arms, carrying you on some wild-eyed journey, rarely do you ever stop and ask, “Why? Why did you inspire me to write a short comic about a possessed Chinese food restaurant?”
Plaid Klaus and I have spent a lot of time building Glimmer World. We’ve researched arcane symbols and sigils; we’ve learned about Johann Weyer’s Pseudomonarchia daemonum, a real page turner about demons in 1577. But, in the end, when we thought about our fans who’ve patiently watched from the sidelines as we cooked up frightening idea after frightening idea, we really wanted to have FUN.
So that’s why.
No major character developments, no expositional back story building. Just pure, unadulterated fun.
One device I used in this piece was to throw the team into the lap of terror, then pull back to a completely different scene. On Page Five, the reader is pulled away from the mayhem at the Golden Dragon to a totally peaceful upper crust establishment called La Perle de La Reine (“The Queen’s Pearl,” a great name that Plaid Klaus came up with), where the Glimmer Society’s mentor Desmond Harker is busy dining with a “research colleague.” We keep D’s dialogue going “off page” as he goes on and on about how well his kids must be behaving when it’s quite the opposite: they’re raising Hell. I think I pulled this idea from a good 80’s movie like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off or The Breakfast Club. You never know what material you can pull from your wasted youth!
Don’t worry, Glimmer Pals, we have some pretty heady stuff coming your way in Volume One: Black Harvest. In the meantime, hold on to your bib, fit your chopsticks between your knuckles like Max mimicking Wolverine, and pray to God that your plate doesn’t come alive.
Be well. Or as well as you can be…
